Rafting on the Pacuare River
(Class III - IV)
This river has been declared a Wild and Scenic River, and offers some of the finest white water in Latin America, providing the adventurous rafter with a ride of unbelievable natural beauty as it winds deep inside one of Costa Rica’s most impressive primordial rainforests. You will traverse 20 miles of remote and scenic waters that course through a wilderness of dense vegetation covering the sides of steep gorges that rise above the river banks. The thick undergrowth provides shelter for jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, sloths, and numerous other species of animals and birds. You’ll break for a delicious lunch served along the river’s edge by your bi-lingual guides. While lunch is being prepared, you’ll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery as you marvel at the raw, pounding power of the untamed Pacuare River that for millions of years has coursed through this virgin tropical rainforest. If you’re ready for a very exciting day filled with wet and wonderful fun, the Pacuare is ready for you! Rafters should be physically fit for this trip, although no previous white-water experience is necessary. Includes safety kayaker. Breakfast is served en-route to the river. You can also fly by helicopter to the river put in, with the possibility of adding the Pacuare Canopy Adventure to your day’s activities.

Rafting on the Sarapiquí River - (Class III)
Winding through the region of the “Eternal Spring,” this river offers some of Costa Rica’s most lush and vibrant scenery. Free-flowing, it has its origins in clear mountain streams that tumble down through thick rainforest, finally joining together in the crystal waters of the beautiful Sarapiquí. Verdant forest reaches right up to the river’s sun-basked banks. If Matisse had come to Costa Rica, this is what he would have painted!
This narrow, low-volume river is ideal for white-water novices, as well as families, all of whom will enjoy its moderately flowing rapids, interspersed with tranquil stretches. The journey is also excellent for bird-watchers and other nature lovers, as the river stretches its way through lush vegetation that is home to hummingbirds, toucans, woodpeckers, and scores of other native bird species. Don’t miss this classic tropical river experience!
Pick up from your San José hotel, driving approximately 2 1/2 hours to the river put-in. A traditional breakfast is served at a restaurant en route. After a short safety briefing, you will rig your raft and begin the journey downriver. Lunch is served on the banks of the river. Take out will be in the afternoon, at which time you can shower and change into dry clothes before your return to San José. his is a truly delightful rafting experience that everyone will enjoy, and ideal for those who are testing themselves on whitewater for the first time. Beginning near a picturesque train station that was once a stop along Costa Rica’s famous Jungle Train, and continuing along this classic trajectory, this section offers beautiful jungle scenery with wide open spaces backdropped by the magnificent Turrialba Volcano. The emotion of numerous rapids completes this exceptional white-water experience on the mighty Reventazón River.
To begin the trip, we will pick you up from your San José hotel in one of our comfortable minibuses for your journey to the river put in. This trip offers the added extra of taking you along the highway that runs through spectacular Braulio Carrillo National Park. As you wind through this protected area’s mountains and valleys, you will enjoy spectacular views of mist-shrouded virgin rainforest stretching as far as the eye can see.
Once through the national park and down in the tropical lowlands, you will stop for a traditional Costa Rican breakfast, and continue on to the river put in. After some brief safety instructions, you’ll launch your raft and begin this exciting white-water journey. A delicious lunch is served on the banks of the river during the trip. At the river take out, you will be able to change into dry clothes for the return to San José.
Depart from San José, driving approximately 2 hours to the Reventazón River. Breakfast en route. At the put in you’ll rig your raft and begin the journey downriver. River time: approximately 2 1/2 hours depending on the water level. Lunch on the riverbank before the afternoon take out and return to San José.
